Chapter no 15

The naga, terrifying creatures of serpentine and humanoid form, close in on the protagonist and the trapped Suriel. Their razor-sharp teeth and lethal talons mark them as the monsters from legends that hunt and kill mortals. Faced with imminent danger, the protagonist quickly makes a decision: she screams to draw their attention and fires an arrow to free the Suriel. The ancient creature vanishes into the woods, leaving her to confront the four naga. With no other choice, she fires at one, killing or wounding it, and flees for her life.

The chase is relentless as the naga pursue her through the dense forest, their snarls and the snapping of branches growing ever closer. Despite her careful planning, they begin to flank and corner her. She fights back with desperation, using her bow as a weapon, and manages to injure one of them. However, she is soon overwhelmed, thrown to the ground, and pinned by the naga, who taunt her with promises of brutal death. Just as she is about to succumb, Tamlin arrives in a feral rage, tearing through the naga with brutal efficiency.

Tamlin’s sheer power and savagery are on full display as he disembowels the remaining naga, saving the protagonist from certain death. Shaken and bloodied, she can barely process the carnage or Tamlin’s transformation. Though his claws and fangs recede, the primal fury of his roar and the carnage he left behind linger in her mind. As he heals her wounds and offers her his tunic to replace her torn clothing, she is struck by the realization of just how dangerous he truly is—not just as a faerie, but as the High Lord of the Spring Court.

The two walk back to the manor in silence, blood-soaked and haunted by the violence. The protagonist struggles to reconcile her feelings: gratitude for Tamlin’s intervention, horror at the slaughter, and guilt for her role in it. She knows Tamlin saved her life, but the weight of his shame and responsibility for his lands is evident. Despite the terrifying events, her encounter with the Suriel lingers in her thoughts, particularly its warnings to stay with Tamlin and avoid searching for more answers about the blight and its origins.

Though she has learned valuable information, she remains conflicted. The knowledge she hoped to use to warn her family feels incomplete and insufficient, and the Suriel’s warnings make her wary of pushing further. The encounter has deepened her awareness of the dangers around her and the complexities of Tamlin’s world, leaving her shaken but resolute. For now, she resolves to heed the Suriel’s advice and stay close to Tamlin, even as unanswered questions continue to weigh on her mind.

Chapter no 16

After soaking in a luxurious bath for nearly an hour, the protagonist finds herself in front of a roaring fireplace, with Alis brushing her damp hair. As she savors a cup of molten chocolate Alis brought her, a conversation unfolds about the ongoing tensions in the faerie realm. When the protagonist raises concerns about potential war and its impact on the human world, Alis dismisses her questions, warning her not to meddle in matters beyond her understanding. The exchange grows heated as Alis recounts her own family tragedies, emphasizing the rarity and preciousness of faerie children, and the protagonist begins to reflect on the complexities of the faerie world.

Later, during dinner with Tamlin and Lucien, the protagonist remains preoccupied with her earlier encounter with the Suriel and the harsh truths she’s learning about the faerie realm. Lucien’s casual remarks reveal that faeries can lie, challenging the protagonist’s assumptions and making her question everything she’s been told. Tamlin reassures her that her family’s memories have been glamoured to protect them, providing a measure of comfort but also raising new doubts about the ethics of such actions. The conversation shifts to the history of faeries and humans, revealing a deeper connection between the two worlds and a legacy of mutual sacrifice.

As the protagonist and Tamlin continue their discussion, she confronts her vulnerabilities and finds herself opening up about her love for her family and her fears for their safety. Tamlin’s unexpected kindness and acknowledgment of her sacrifices unsettle her, but they also spark a tentative bond between them. His offer to provide her with painting supplies becomes a symbolic gesture of trust and understanding, giving her a sense of agency and a new outlet for self-expression.

The dynamic between the protagonist and Tamlin begins to shift as he shows her a more genuine, unguarded side of himself. His invitation to explore the gallery in his estate reflects his desire to connect with her on a deeper level, and his warmth contrasts sharply with the guarded interactions she’s had with others in the faerie realm. This moment of vulnerability marks a turning point for both of them, hinting at the possibility of mutual respect and even friendship.

The chapter ends with the protagonist reflecting on her evolving feelings toward Tamlin and the complexities of her situation. The introduction of painting as a creative outlet symbolizes her desire to reclaim some semblance of normalcy and control in a world that feels increasingly foreign and dangerous. As she holds onto the crumpled list of words in her pocket, she begins to feel the stirrings of hope, determination, and a cautious optimism for what lies ahead.
